During my sophomore year at Montclair State (2021), I was cast in the first ever staged production ever of Brooklyn’s Bridge, a new musical about the life of Emily Roebling. I also went on to understudy the role and perform in the ensemble of the piece at the 2022 reading in NYC.
Until recently, it was unbeknownst to historians and the public that Emily, somewhat secretly, engineered close to the entirety of the building of the Brooklyn Bridge while her husband was sick. Playing Emily and being a part of this amazing story taught me just how powerful, relevant, and illuminating this art form can be, and inspired me to continue to use my voice to tell stories that empower women.
Brooklyn’s Bridge (2021)
New Works Initiative at Montclair State University
Brooklyn’s Bridge is inspired by the extraordinary life of Emily Roebling, wife of Brooklyn Bridge Chief Engineer Washington Roebling. While working in the caissons under the east river, Washington had a debilitating attack of “the bends” and became bedridden. For the next eleven years, only Emily was seen on the worksite, delivering plans, handling both engineering and political issues. The New York Times recently revised their obituary acknowledging that, SHE built the bridge. And as the Brooklyn Bridge grows stronger, foundations to towers, cables to roadway…so does their love for one another, as Emily navigates the uncharted waters; a Victorian woman in a man’s world.
